Open Evenings 2015

Thank you for attending the Open Evenings at Oldham Hulme Grammar School and thank you for visiting the Geography Department.  We organised two competitions which were very well supported:  the FoodMiles challenge and the Guess the Photograph competition.

The answer to the FoodMiles challenge was 1485.42km.  Well done to Rajjan Singh for being the closest.

The answer to the Guess the Photograph competition was rock formations inside a cave.  The winning entry was selected at random as Scarlett Flood from Dobcross.  Well done!

We look forward to welcoming you on Entrance Exam Day on Wednesday 13 January 2016.

Summer Photograph Competition 2015 Results

Thank you to all 43 students who took the time to enter the Geography Department's summer photograph competition 2015.  The theme was dramatic landscapes.  Entries were judged by the Geography department staff along with Mr McRoyall and members of the photography club. The winning entries were chosen after lengthy deliberation:

Overall winner:  Katie Mills 11Q Tignes, French Alps.

Girls' runner up: Emaan Mirza 7F The Grand Canyon

Boys' runner up: Chris Stringer 13D Canyonlands

The Geography Society’s Summer Photograph Competition 2015

The theme of this summer’s photograph competition is ‘Dramatic Landscapes.’  The competition is open to students in years 7 to 13.  All entries will receive a house point and there will be prizes for the winning three entries. Students are encouraged to photograph the urban and rural landscapes they encounter over the summer holiday and enter their most dramatic shot.

 

Submit your entry to your Geography teacher by Monday 14th September:

Include your name and form with your entry.

The photograph must be taken by you.

The photograph must be taken this summer holiday.

Only one entry per person.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale has struck Nepal in an area between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara.  Sadly, loss of life and damage to the built environment is severe.

Snow Day Work for PJS classes

Year 7 classes complete the work set (the contour diagrams) if you have your books at home; otherwise use the link on this site to explore OS Map Zone (a bit of fun).

Year 9 class do some research in preparation for a class presentation on a cyclone of your own choice. It must be a cyclone and not a hurricane and therefore in the Indian Ocean region. Try to include details of how this event may differ in magnitude and effect from a hurricane in the Caribbean.

Snow Day Work for AHM classes

Once you've got bored of playing in the snow and on FIFA 15 you can do the following:

Year 13 - continue with the research on your two earthquake case-studies

Year 10 - complete the booklet started yesterday on Population and Resources

Year 11 - complete the work on looking at London - use the handout from Tuesday.

Pakistan hit again

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck south-west Pakistan, in a region where at least 400 people died in a quake earlier this week.

Telica blows!

Northwestern Nicaragua’s Telica volcano startled nearby villagers at dawn on Wednesday with a sudden blast that sent ash soaring above its crater.

Photographic Competition Winner 2013

 

The winner of this year's Geogrpahy Department photographic competition is the image of the spring lambs. The picture taken by Roberta Pellow-Bailey fitted perfectly with the theme of regeneration. A peacful local scene is framed neatly by the grasses in the foreground. However, with a bumper entry, it was a very difficult decsion for the judges to make. Ben Butterworth's metrolink and Annie Preston's atmospheric dawn were both pictures that were among my personal favourites.

2013 HDI released

The Human Development Index for 2013 has been released.

The UK are 26th in the ranking. Norway leads the way and Niger come at the bottom.
