A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck south-west Pakistan, in a region where at least 400 people died in a quake earlier this week.

Read more on the BBC website

Barely half an hour after they were jolted by a major earthquake on Tuesday, people of the Pakistani coastal town of Gwadar had another shock when they saw a new island emerge in the sea, just over a kilometre from the shore. Click the picture for more details

Telica blows!

Photographic Competition Winner 2013

The winner of this year's Geogrpahy Department photographic competition is the image of the spring lambs. The picture taken by Roberta Pellow-Bailey fitted perfectly with the theme of regeneration. A peacful local scene is framed neatly by the grasses in the foreground. However, with a bumper entry, it was a very difficult decsion for the judges to make. Ben Butterworth's metrolink and Annie Preston's atmospheric dawn were both pictures that were among my personal favourites.

Photograhic Competition 2013

The theme is "Regeneration" and entering couldn't be easier:
Bring into school a photograph taken by yourself in the period between February 2013 and  mid April 2013; remember to save a digital copy if you have one. Pictures taken on smart phones can grab the spontaneous image but remember it will need to be transferred onto a memory stick or pc. As usual, the judging criteria will be primarily the geographic element but also the artistic merit and the overall quality.
Here are just a few ideas
~ the emerging landscape in Spring
~ regeneration of a rundown part of town
~ new life emerging on the farm or the fells
~ the new and the modern, from trams to wind farms
~ even the new start to the day

Census 2011 Deprivation Maps

Another very useful site for human geogrpahers. Explore your home town and discover the levels of deprivation. These are calculated using a basket of indicators all combined into one figure. The data is based on the latest census information. However, please be very careful about making value judgements based on this evidence. Follow this link to the Guardian web site.
